![]() Spotify has only spoken of CD-quality music in relation to its HiFi or Platinum tier, rather than going into the realm of hi-res music that increases the sampling rates beyond CDs, so you shouldn’t need too much exotic equipment to play it back. Examples of lossless audio compression algorithms include ATRAC from Sony, FLAC, HD-AAC (which Spotify already uses in its Premium tier) and Dolby True-HD. Spotify HiFi will most likely be part of the standard Spotify app, though as the company has a history of providing lower bitrates through its web app it might not turn up there. We’re still waiting, but the presentation showed us a bunch of creator tools, user features, and new programming available on the service, but we previously suspected that. There was a lot of speculation Spotify HiFi might be announced (again) at the company’s annual Stream On event on 8 March. Since then, though, we’ve had news that Spotify HiFi could be coming later in 2023. Crucially, though, when can us mortals expect it? Söderström was coy on the matter, telling The Verge that that HiFi “is coming at some point.” It goes on to say that the Spotify catalogue has been reformatted to lossless quality, and employees even have access to it. The industry changed and we had to adapt.” In the same article, it’s reported that HiFi has been pretty much ready to go for over a year now. After the presentation, Spotify co-president Gustav Söderström told The Verge that Spotify “are going to do it, but we’re going to do it in a way where it makes sense for us and for our listeners. We even got a Billie Eilish featuring ad and everything.īut, what we didn’t get, was any word on Spotify HiFi. The high-quality streams would, the company said, be “rolling out in select markets later this year”. As reported by Bloomberg, a new tier called ‘Supremium’ could release later this year. This is rumoured to be a version of Spotify HiFi. Up until now, Spotify audio was limited at 320kbps, unlike CDs, which max out at 1,411kbps – and the upgrade should offer far higher levels of detail and clarity for those with discerning ears. Spotify says that "high quality music streaming is consistently one of the most requested new features by our users", and it's little wonder when you consider how many other streaming services have already offered this for years. In an effort to undercut the competition, Spotify could price its HiFi streaming tier at around $12.99 / £12.99 / AU$16 per month, compared to Amazon's $14.99 / £14.99 and Tidal's $19.99 / £19.99 / AU$23.99 Hi-Res streaming tiers.
